What Is Under Slab Plumbing?

Plumbing can be run under concrete slabs of all kinds, including slab foundations. Plumbing is hidden by walls, floors, and roofs, but it also can run under concrete sidewalks, stoops, patios, and foundations. When a home is constructed, the plumbing that runs under the home must be put in before the concrete is poured. This is done in ditches dug beneath the slab, but accessing those pipes when there’s an issue can be challenging!

Common Signs of Slab Leak

  • Sudden increased water bill
  • Sound of running water
  • Foundation cracks
  • Shift in the soil near the house
  • Floor discoloration

It’s important to contact a plumber as soon as possible! We will locate the leak and provide you with a quote for repairs.

Why Concrete Slabs Make Plumbing More Challenging

While there are benefits of using a slab foundation over a traditional foundation, they also pose unique plumbing challenges. For example, it’s extremely difficult to cut through the concrete slab to reach damaged pipes. More so, while fixing one piece of pipe, you can easily accidentally damage another part of the plumbing while cutting or jackhammering concrete.

Installing plumbing in a new slab foundation also has its own challenges, and if you’re building a new home, make sure that you utilize a plumber with experience with under slab plumbing.

Common Causes of Slab Leaks

Like all plumbing problems, leaks occur over time as the pipes age. Even the strongest materials experience wear and tear, and if your pipes are old, they are more likely to spring a leak. If you have a much older home, your plumbing may be made with galvanized pipe, which can rust over time and lead to leaks and water contamination.

Other factors beyond age also affect slab leaks, such as pressure from tree roots or the freeze and thaw cycle. The good news is, your leaks can be repaired! Contact the team at Plumbing Solutions for under slab plumbing.
