A large number of people are unaware that their water heater may be exhibiting signs of impending failure. Aside from obvious leaks, many people do not know what to look for to see if their water heater is in danger of failing. There are several tell-tale signs to keep a lookout for that can indicate your water heater may be on its last leg. Our firm has compiled a list of warning signs to look out for in order to help you avoid a home catastrophe.
1. Is Your Water Heater 10 Years Old?
Heaters typically have a 10 year lifespan, with leaks being more likely to occur once this time period has expired. For this reason, it is vital that you keep track of the age of your water heater. Somewhere on the upper half of the tank, there should be a sticker that displays the serial number and date of manufacture. This can be tricky to figure out, as serial numbers can appear to be a mess of random numbers and letters. If you know what to look for, however, this can provide key information about the age of your water heater. It is important that you visit your manufacturer’s website in order to determine how to read your specific tank’s serial number.
2. Does Your Water Appear Red/Orange?
If you have rusty-colored water coming out of your hot-side piping, your heater may be deteriorating on the inside. If your home is equipped with galvanized pipes, however, this may be a sign of rusty pipes. To avoid replacing a working heater, try draining about 15 gallons of hot water from the heater. If the water is still tinted with a red or orange color after draining this amount, it is likely that your heater is the culprit.
3. Do You Hear a Banging Noise?
Over time, a layer of sediment will collect in your tank, hardening as it becomes repeatedly heated and cooled. When this happens, you may hear hard chunks of mineral deposits banging around on the inside of your tank as it heats up. These cause your heater to accumulate inner damage more quickly, as well as forcing your tank to burn more fuel in order to heat itself up.
